Waking up in the February sun. By John Jessop

Following the few days of warm weather the bees have started flying out and some pollen is being brought in. I think it's too early to start opening up colonies but I've had a look through the clear crownboards and hefted the hives.

The clusters are spreading out but the hives are very light. I've placed trays of fondant over the feed holes in case the weather turns cold again and they run out of stores.

It's a time to monitor the progress and give sufficient to meet the colonies food needs without introducing too much sugar and degrading the spring honey which I hope to harvest in due course.
